There is a town in Maine,
Where every storybook character you’ve ever known,
Is trapped between two worlds,
Victims of a powerful curse,
Only one knows the truth,
And only one can break her spell.
And so begins the new US fantasy drama called Once Upon a Time starring Jennifer Morrison and Ginnifer Goodwin. I am pretty much behind everyone else and only get to watch an episode every so often. I actually think conclusion is only a few weeks away over here in the UK, where the first series is already finished in America.
Just imagine the famous of fairytale characters; Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Evil Queen, Prince Charming, Rumplestiltskin and Jiminy Cricket, but all as you’ve never seen them before. They have been cursed out of FairytaleLand and into Storybook, Maine and live ordinary lives as a teacher, waitress, mayor, sheriff and business entrepreneur.
As Jennifer Morrison arrives, she is soon to find out by her son (whom she gave up for adoption) that she is in fact the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. As the Evil Queen curses all of FairytaleLand into dissolution, Emma Snow (Morrison) is saved by pure magic and all the trapped characters eagerly await her return to set them free from their curse and destroy the Evil Queen and allow Happy Endings to resume once more.
Yes, I know; it all sounds rather gimmicky and a bit tacky, but it is so addictive. It’s like my guilty pleasure at the moment in a sort of soap opera kind of way. Perhaps it stems back to what we know about the fairytale characters in literature and then how ABC actually turn that all on its head and give the characters another outlook. Sometimes, they don’t actually tell you who the character is until about half way through and it is fun trying to guess who they are.
If you secretly love a bit of a cheesy drama that actually has some decent acting, then give this a go. You can pre-order it here. There are so many TV series, from America especially, that are getting cancelled recently, but this one has already been renewed. What does that tell you eh?
