Book Preview: Runners by Sharon Sant

It seems that 2013 is going to be one year UK Young Adult author Sharon Sant won’t forget Runners Coverin a hurry. She is the well-received author of the Sky Song trilogy; all three novels published in the first half of 2013, and now a new novel is set for release. I don’t know how Ms Sant does it, but if Runners is anything like her urban fantasy trilogy, then we are definitely in for a treat.

Runners follows the life of Elijah, a young teenager who lives in a world unlike our own. Set in a future England, this dystopian novel mixes gritty realism with an element of fantasy. I have to admit, when I read this, it will be the first dystopian novel I’ve ever read. Here is the blurb:

Elijah is nothing special. He’s just a skinny kid doing his best to stay one step ahead of starvation and the people who would have him locked away in a labour camp – just another Runner. But what he stumbles upon in a forest in Hampshire shows him that the harsh world he knows will become an even more sinister place, unless he can stop it. As past and present and parallel dimensions collide, freedom becomes the last thing on his mind as he is suddenly faced with a battle to save his world from extinction. But before Elijah can find the courage to be the hero the world needs, he must banish his own demons and learn to trust his friends. And all the while, the sinister figure of Maxwell Braithwaite looms, his path inextricably bound to Elijah’s by a long dead physicist, and hell bent on stopping Elijah, whatever the cost.

It sounds incredibly intriguing doesn’t it? I’ve heard some great things about this sinister character ‘Maxwell Braithwaite’ and we all love a good baddie, don’t we? I also have to admit that I looked up the term ‘dystopian’ –

“A society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding.”

There aren’t many teenage dystopian novels I’ve ever heard of, but with the Hunger Games growing in popularity, I’m sure Sharon Sant can put another runner (*ahem) into the race with this. I’m a fan of Sharon Sant’s writing style, and it will be interesting to see how she manages to pull off another winner in a new teenage sub-genre. I like how she can write brilliant detail using few words, and also how she doesn’t patronise her readers. In her debut, Sky Song, I loved the chemistry and relationship between the three main characters, and it sounds like we are going to be introduced to a new gang in here too, so rapport, emotion and connection are things I’ll be definitely looking out for. I was a fan of TV’s Dark Angel, which features Jessica Alba as a super soldier the US government manufactured. At the time, I didn’t even realise it was dystopian, but looking back the signs were obvious.

You can’t help but feel the raw emotion in Runner’s video trailer too:

About the Author:Sharon Sant2

Sharon Sant was born in Dorset but now lives in Stoke-on-Trent. Aged eight she wrote a poem about ET, which received the ultimate praise of being pinned onto the classroom wall, and from that moment on she knew she’d never stop writing. She graduated from Staffordshire University in 2009 with a degree in English and creative writing. She currently works part time as a freelance editor and continues to write her own stories. An avid reader with eclectic tastes across many genres, when not busy trying in vain to be a domestic goddess, she can often be found lurking in local coffee shops with her head in a book. Sometimes she pretends to be clever but really loves nothing more than watching geeky TV and eating Pringles.
